  1. INTRODUCTION:

Web TV is the combination of television and the Internet. It can be able to access the Internet through your television instead of a desktop PC. We can play with game shows, participate in polls, and chat with other viewers during Interactive TV programming.

A Web TV is a specially-adapted television set designed to allow internet connection, or more commonly, a Set-top box which connects to a standard TV for the same purpose. We can automatically program your VCR which connects Internet with a click of button.

Example of Web Page in Web TV:
  1. ABOUT WEB TV:
Web TV gets you connected by a TV and a Phone Line or Cable. We can send email to friends and family through the Internet, and interact with new forms of entertainment all from your TV. It allows us to play along with game shows, make business through videoconferencing, participate in polls, and chat with other viewers during Interactive TV programming.
3. HISTORY:

  • In September, 1996, Sony and Phillips introduced the first Web TV Set-top boxes from Web TV Networks. They became known as Web TV Classic, sometimes called the Web TV Internet Terminal.
  • In August of 1997, Microsoft Corp bought Web TV Networks.
  • In January 1999, EchoStar Communications Corp. announced the Web TV Personal TV service for Satellite.
4. INTERACTIVE PROGRAMMING:

  • Much like interactive advertisements that enable advertisers to reach new audiences and differentiate their offerings. Interactive programming enables broadcasters and content providers to engage viewers in unique, relevant and useful ways.
  • Content and services can include the ability for viewers to get more in-depth information on the programs they are watching, voice opinions through online voting, chat with other show fans, play games, purchase merchandise on demand and much more.
5. WEBTV OPERATORS:

1.      MSN TV (formerly Web TV), an internet appliance from Microsoft.

2.      WalawA (now bankrupted), based on a Set-top box from Netgem
       embedded in a standard TV.

3.      Thomson Tak, high-resolution TV from Thompson Company

6. Features:

With Interactive TV programming you can:

1.      Play along with game shows, participate in polls, and chat with other viewers.
2.       Automatically program your VCR with a click of a button.

3.      Search thousands of on-screen Interactive TV Listings.

4.      Join a community of people who share ideas through online Chat.

5.      We can also use it for entertainment purposes using audio and video effects which are supported by this TV.

7. set-top Box:

COMPONENTS OF SET-TOP BOX
  •      Network interface
  •         Decoder
  •         Buffer
  •         Synchronization hardware
Network interface:
Allows the user to receive data from the server and send data back to the server, in a manner that it can be understood by the server.
The decoder:
In order to save storage space, disk bandwidth, and network bandwidth, movies are usually encoded (compressed) before they are sent over the network. Thus, the end-users need a decoder to decode (uncompress among other things) the incoming stream's data before it's viewable. This is part of what a modem does. The decoding process is sometimes known as Demodulation or Heavy Lifting.

The buffer:
Due to delay jitters in the network, the arrival time of a video stream cannot be determined exactly. In order to guarantee continuous consistent playback for the viewer (end-user/subscriber) the stream is often received one or even a few seconds before it's actually seen by the end-user.  This way if there are fluctuations (even those measured in milliseconds) in the transport time of the video stream to that receiver, the viewer won't know the difference as their buffer has a bit of time to spare.

Synchronization hardware:
Let's remember that a movie (or whatever one watches via a set-top box) consists of both video and audio streams. They must be synchronized with each other before being viewed. Other streams may be added too which could include that which is Enhanced (ITV) related.

8. MULTIMEDIA:

  • The television interface to the Internet provides broad creative opportunities for web development. Sound and animation contribute a great deal to the creation of a more "television-like" experience for the user.

  • The latest version of Web TV supports a wide spectrum of sound and animation, including: MOD, MIDI and GSM, RealAudio 3.0, and Macromedia’s Flash 1.0.
9. TYPES OF CONNECTIONS:

Ø CABLE MODEM

Ø CABLE INTERNET

Ø WEB TV

CABLE MODEM:

The main components present in this connection are:
1.      Pc
2.      TV
3.      Modem
4.      Cable box
5.      Splitter

In this connection, TV is connected to PC with Internet connection through Cable box and Cable modem. A Cable modem present at the PC provides high-speed access to the desktop computer. A Splitter between the cable box and the modem separates our required data signals from the cable and sends it to our TV.
CABLE MODEM
CABLE INTERNET:

The main components in this connection are:

                                                1.   TV
                                                2.   Cable box

The Cable box used in this connection is different from the above one. This Cable box automatically accesses the Internet with out connecting the modem. This is better than above connection, since there is no need of connecting modem to PC.
CABLE INTERNET

WEB TV:

The main components in this connection are:

1.   TV

 2.  Web TV box

 3.   Cable box

In this connection, the phone line facility also exists. The Web TV delivers Internet access to the TV using an analog modem over a telephone line when people use phone facility. This telephone line is connected through Web TV box.

The Cable box is as usual used to access the Internet. This is an efficient one when compared with above two connections.

WEB TV

The primary components must be considered in broadcast design for the Web TV
   o   Remote control

  • The Audience

  • Screen size

  • Color usage

  • Mouse less navigation

10. ADVANTAGES:

Ø  They do not need to understand PC technology to make Web TV work.

Ø  Consumers do not need to spend more money on a computer.

Ø  There is no complicated configuration, as there might be with modems, Netscape, other ISP's, etc.

Ø  More comfortable environment-sofa, large screen, etc.

11. DISADVANTAGES:

Ø  Users cannot store files locally or download programs, since the E-mail service is basically text only.

Ø  The only browser that can be used is Web TV’s own. Users cannot use word-processing or spreadsheet programs

Ø  It does support IRC and HTML chats, but not Java-powered chats.

12. conclusion:
The television interface to the Web offers much potential, especially to providers of goods and services. As Web TV's Crossover Links(TM) become more common, integrating television programming with web site content will greatly enhance the media experience for the viewing audience.
